Kansas Raw Milk Regulations Overview
Kansas allows the direct sale of raw (unpasteurized) milk from the farm to the end consumer.
Direct Farm Sales
Under Kansas law:
Raw milk must be purchased directly from the farm.
Raw milk cannot be sold through grocery stores, restaurants, or traditional retail outlets.
Raw milk cannot be shipped across state lines for human consumption.
Drop-Off & Delivery Guidance
In June 2025, the Kansas Department of Agriculture issued guidance clarifying that farms may deliver pre-purchased raw milk orders to designated drop-off locations or pickup points under certain conditions.
This guidance allows customers to:
Place orders directly with the farm for pick up at designated drop-off locations
Orders must be paid for before picking up
Customers must have visited the farm previously and completed an affidavit with the farm affirming they are making an informed purchase of raw milk
The guidance does not authorize retail resale of raw milk through stores or third-party retailers.
Farm Requirements
Kansas raw dairy farms are expected to follow sanitation and animal health standards intended to support safe milk production.
This includes:
Clean milking equipment and facilities
Proper milk handling and refrigeration
Healthy dairy animals
Routine sanitation practices
Raw Milk Products
Kansas regulations may treat different raw dairy products differently depending on processing methods and product type.
Raw dairy products may include:
Raw milk
Raw cream
Raw butter
Raw milk cheeses
Fermented dairy products
Some products may require additional licensing, processing standards, or aging requirements.
Herd Shares
Kansas also permits herd share arrangements, where individuals purchase an ownership interest in a dairy animal or herd and receive milk from the animals they own.
